With a motto of “Snipping, Clipping, And Shaving Our Way To Cancer Cures!” Goin’ Bald for Bucks is an inititative that challenges participants to shave their heads in exchange for monetary donations to rasie money for Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

While SGI’s high school faculty and students have participated in this before, this year marks the first year that all four schools in the district will be taking part.

“Bald for Bucks is taking place on April 6 district-wide,” said Chris Scarpine, Springville Elementary School (SES) principal. “Each building will be hosting their own hair cutting. SES will host ours from 7-9 a.m.”

Scarpine returned to the SGI district in the fall after working in Lake Shore for a couple years. “At Lake Shore CSD, where the Bald for Bucks initiative originated and where my girls attend, it has been a huge success at the elementary level,” he explained about the decision to bring it to SES. “Cancer doesn’t discriminate and has impacted many of all age levels. This opportunity gives our young people an opportunity to part of  a solution.”

Because it’s SES’s first year participating, Scarpine said he doens’t really have a specific goal in mind as far as how much money they hope to raise. “My hope is that each year we raise more and more,” he said.

Participants can either get their head shaved to honor cancer patients who lose their hair due to radiation or chemo, or cut off eight inches or more and donate it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

Those interested in donating to SGI’s Bald for Bucks have two options: Donate to an individual or donate to the Springville GI team. By donating to the individual within the team, that individual is eligible for prizes.

“All of us in one way or another have been touched by cancer,” Scarpine said. “I thought this would be a great way for our elementary students to show their support and get involved in this very worthwhile opportunity.”

According to the Bald for Bucks web site, “Funds raised (through Bald for Bucks) support the cutting-edge research and patient-care programs at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The majority of donations made to Roswell Park fund new, unique and major cancer research to find cures and save lives — and every gift makes a difference.”
