Last weekend, SGI freshman Mikey Evans headed to the wrestling state championships in Albany to compete in the 99 lbs. weight class.

He won his first match by Technical fall (a win by 15 points) and then lost his next two matches 5-2 and 6-5.  His second match was against the No. 3 seed, Len Balducci.  It was a tight match throughout and he wound up getting reversed and caught on his back near the end of the third.  Balducci went on to place 3rd in the tournament.

Evans’ consolation match was against the No. 4 seed, Micah Roes, and went back and forth with him throughout the match, ultimately falling short in the end.  Roes went on to lose to Balducci in the third place match 11-1.

“Mikey had a tough draw in the tournament, having to wrestle the third seed and fourth seed back to back, but at that level, every match is going to be a challenge,” said wrestling coach, Mark Vogel.  “We’re proud of what Mikey has been able to accomplish in his two years so far.  He’s already climbing the all-times win record and is the first SGI athlete to qualify for the state tournament two years in a row.  He’s got a positive future and we’re excited for what’s in store.”

Great job Mikey!
