The April showers have brought May flowers and it’s time to get out and enjoy springtime in Springville and all its neighboring communities. Races, festivals, cool events and everything in between is yours for the taking this May!

Get a breath of fresh air by taking a hike or bike ride around the area. Head to Griffis Sculpture Park and check out dozens of cool sculptures scattered throughout many well-groomed trails. Don’t forget your camera as there are countless photo opps.

Celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 14. Plan now for that special brunch or activity.

The long holiday weekend with Memorial Day on Monday, May 29, is the unofficial start to summer and camping season. Book your stay at thousands of area camp sites and cabins.

Special events are happening all month long.

May is a great time to give back. On May 6, sign up for I Love My Park Day. This state-wide initiative is about volunteering at your favorite state park or other state land. Many area parks are participating this year, including Allegany State Park, Artpark, Evangola State Park, Golden Hill State Park, Knox Farm State Park, Long Point State Park, Niagara Falls State Park, Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, Whirlpool Park and Wilson Tuscarora State Park. In the spirit of race season, there are many others you can be a part of.

Head to Allegany State Park on May 6 for the Allegany Adventure Run, a trail run through the beautiful Allegany State Park. For more info, visit

Take the short drive to Sprague Brook Park or the Grinder Trail Race on May 14, where runners gear up for this wild and wicked 3.5-miler through park trails including single track, grass sections, creek crossing and hills. Register at

Starting on May 23 and running through June 27, the Dirt Devil Series features six individual trail running races taking place at Sprague Brook Park on Tuesday evenings. For more info, visit

The Allegany State Park GeoBash XII happens May 19-21. The weekend starts on Thursday night when the organizing committee will be hosting an informal “Pizza & Mountain Pies” event to thank those that help out with setting up the event grounds and to welcome early comers to the park. The annual Meet and Greet Bonfire event hosted by the Allegany Rangers will be held again on Friday night. The musicians, The Very Amazing Gentlemen, were a huge hit last year, and they enjoyed the event so much, that they are coming to entertain again. The Bertrand Chaffee Hospital Foundation’s fifth annual Garden Party is planned for Thursday, May 25 at the Springville Country Club. As the major fundraising event for the BCH Foundation, the Garden Party is a way to focus community support on a single project. The foundation board will use this year’s event to help fund the purchase of a transesophageal echocardiogram. This equipment will be used in the BCH Heart Center. The Garden Party starts at 5 p.m. and concludes by 8 p.m. The Springville Jazz Orchestra and Hintz of Thunder will provide the musical entertainment. Tickets are $50 each or $80 per couple and are available at the BCH reception desk. The 16th annual Letchworth Red, White & Blue Balloon Rally will be held over Memorial Day weekend May 26th – 29th, 2017. Six flights are scheduled from Friday night through Monday morning at 6 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. The launch site is the Archery Field Overlook just inside the Castile park entrance.

Ready to get your adrenaline rush on? On May 5, Sky High Adventure Park opens for the season. The Aerial Park, which features ziplines, platforms and courses of varying levels of difficulty, and Climbing Forest, which resembles a 3D version of a rock wall, will be open weekends only through June 16, and then open daily.  The Mountain Coaster opens on weekends starting May 19, and will be open daily starting June 16.

Are you anxious to get out on the water? Grab your kayak or canoe and head to your favorite waterway.

This year’s 2017 annual Great Valley Volunteer Firemans Regatta will be held May 6. Sponsored annually by the Great Valley Volunteer Fire Company, this 10 mile regatta is fun for spectators and participants.
