The varsity football team had four rushers that had 100 yards or more lead them to a 58-42 victory over Depew last Friday night. Topher Elkins led the charge with five carries for 131 yards, Connor O’Brien chipped in with 129 yards, Ian Baker had 110 yards and Marcus James added 101. The first round of the Chuck Funke Bowl series was an exciting one that saw the two teams combine for over 1,000 yards of offense and 100 points. John Domes led the defense with seven tackles. The Griffs will play for the Bowl championship this Thursday night at 7:30 at Pioneer vs. East Aurora.
Girls Varsity Volleyball, coach Kristin Hughey
Varsity volleyball senior night was victorious!
The girls stammered a bit more n the beginning, losing game one, but picked it up to win the next three in a row. Passing was on target with Sydney Rosati organizing her team’s defense. Middle hitter Caroline Roy was unstoppable at the net! Senior Gabby Nichols had 2 solid blocks shutting down Pioneer’s middle.
Senior Sarah Zimmer had a spectacular night passing, with seven assists.
senior Alexia Sopko served tough with 5 aces and swung hard at the net for four kills.
Senior Jessica Roggie again played consistent volleyball tonight making smart setting decisions; she is credited with 15 assists on the night. Senior Chloe Wnuk was on fire hitting weak side! She had two kills in game one, and got stronger from there. Her passing was her best of the season.
Congratulations to the girls on a solid win.
Next it’s on to playoffs, with the first game against Newfane.

Girls JV Volleyball, coach Robert Gainey
The JV girls volleyball team came out of last week’s match with Lackawanna as 3-0 winners. The girls were led by the timely hitting of Sara Ehlers from the outside. She consistently hit the ball well and finished with a number of solid kills to lead the group to a 25-16 win. The girls took game two behind the strong play of Marin Lehr and excellent passing of Vaidah Emerling. The girls took that game 25-17. The team finished the sweep behind the great back row play by Amber Nichols and steady net play of Ashley Blesy.
The JV girls volleyball team hosted the Pioneer Panthers on Monday night and lost 2-1. The girls played very competitively throughout the first game, but eventually fell 25-18. The team had some strong moments in game two but couldn’t overcome the tough serving from the Panthers, they dropped that game 25-16. The girls would not be swept as they took the third game 25-18. That game saw Marin Lehr and Amber Nichols play well to help lead the team. The girls had an incredible season finishing 14-3 overall. The team was led by a group of outstanding sophomores, including Morgan Christ, Abby Stressinger, Mary DiGangi, and Erica Tyler. The team will look toward the future as players such as Sara Ehlers, Emily Ehlers, Ivette Lewandowski, Vaidah Emerling, Alyssa Hunter, Marin Lehr, Ashley Blesy and Amber Nichols lead the team next season. Great job girls!
Girls Modified Soccer, coach Alicia Dziak
On Thursday, Oct. 20, the girls lost 3-2 to Lake Shore. Goals were scored by Dru Robinson and Mabel Robinson. Great play in the net by Logan Lukert and Serenity Heim. All the girls played hard in the rain and cold, but just couldn’t pull out the win.
On Monday, Oct. 24, the girls headed to Eden and after an 8-minute OT period, came away with their second tie of the season against the same team, 1-1. The Griffs’ lone goal was scored by Dru Robinson. The girls put in their best effort of the year and dominated the second half, with exceptional play by Shay Ellis, Ava Dziak, Kiley Nolan, Arial Link, Shelby Smith and Brooke Walker. Sarah O’Neal and Serenity Heim rocked it in goal.
The girls play their final game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 29 at home against Holland, at 10 a.m., and the modified boys play at the same time, also at home. Come cheer on the youngest of the SGI soccer players!
