On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Springville J.V. Griffins football team capped off its season with a 46-18 victory over the Newfane Panthers on Pop Warner Field.
Despite the high scoring affair, it was once again the defense that took charge early. On Newfane’s first possession of the game, A.J. Slippy forced a fumble and Tom Orndorff scooped it up to return 51 yards to the endzone for an SGI touchdown. Eric Pruitt ran in the extra point attempt, one of his four conversions on the night, to put the Griffs up 8-0 early.
With the defense setting the tone, the offense followed suit, exploding with some long touchdowns of their own. Tom Orndorff connected with Slippy for three touchdowns through the air, as Slippy scored on receptions of 46, 60 and 50 yards. Two of those scores were on screen passes, which featured strong blocking from Tim Blesy and Nolan Longbine. Slippy and Orndorff also delivered on the ground as Slippy tallied a 53-yard touchdown run and Orndorff added a 1-yard score.
Orndorff finished with a season-best 211 yards passing while Slippy had 239 total yards from scrimmage.
The Griffins defensive unit gave up a few big plays but mostly controlled the line of scrimmage. The group totalled 12 tackles for loss of yards. Pruitt added his first interception of the season to seal the win. Slippy led the team with six tackles and Cole Baker had six.
The victory brought the junior varsity season to a close with a three-game win streak to even the Griffs’ record at 4-4. While the J.V. team is done, the sophomores are set to suit up for the varsity team as it takes on East Aurora/Holland on Wednesday night.
