On Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Springville-Griffith Institute boys swimming and diving team visited East Aurora, who had previously clinched the Div. 3 title and celebrated 50 years in a row of winning its division.

What turned out to be a loss to an extremely talented East Aurora team, was taken with great pride by the Griffins. Numerous best times and qualifying scores were set by the athletes who have been looking towards post season since winning their own division title in December.

On Friday, Jan. 18, the boys swimmers traveled to Maryvale for their last dual meet of the season. Anticipating a close matchup and a number of great races, the boys were excited to end the season with a great meet. Battling back and forth all night, the final score came down to a one point difference, in favor of Maryvale, 93-92. The team again marked many best times, as Zach Hughley and Justin Buczek provided two highlights. Hughey qualified for sectionals in the 100-yard Backstroke and Buczek qualified for ECICs in the 200-yard IM.

On Saturday, the divers traveled to Lockport to compete in an 11-dive meet to practice this format and potentially qualify for additional postseason meets. Wyatt Fuller took fourth overall and is 7 points away from a second consecutive year of going to states. Jackson Richert placed 9th overall and earned a sectional qualifying score and will join the other two divers for all Western New York postseason meets. Dakota Schelble finished 19th on the day.

Next up for the team is the ECIC A (Erie County small school) competition. Diving will take place Friday night, while swimming will be Saturday morning.
