Pioneer (6-1) powers past SGI in regular season football finale

Tra’e Hill (5 rushes, 85 yards) and Tyler Ely (7-74) each ran for two touchdowns to power Pioneer in a regular season-ending 58-0 victory over Springville on Friday in Yorkshire.

The Griffins fell to 0-7 in a game where they committed five turnovers.

Logan Ellis returned an interception 46 yards for a score and also hauled in a 40-yard receiving TD from Brody Hopkins to propel the Panthers (6-1) to 29 first quarter points. Ellis also registered three tackles for loss.

Jordan King and Josh Oun chipped in 8 tackles apiece for the Pioneer defense.

On Sunday morning, Pioneer received the fifth seed in the Section 6 Class B playoffs with a matchup at No. 4 Cheektowaga. The Panthers’ only loss came 14-7 at home to Cheektowaga in week 4.

Reflecting on the regular season, Pioneer coach Jim Duprey said: “We did our business. We took care of everything we needed to after the loss to Cheektowaga. We have a chance to go up there and play them again. They’re an excellent team that’s getting better. We’re getting better, too. It ought to be a whale of a game.”

Springville will finish its season on Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a matchup game against Eden at 4:45 p.m. at Pop Warner Field.
