The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity girls tennis team completed its regular season last night by defeating a scrappy Eden team 3-2.
Winning the first point on the day was Haylee Cerrone, 6-1, 6-4. Winning point No. 2 was Maria Rumfola by a score of 6-0, 6-2.
“(Haylee) Cerrone played a clean game and kept her opponent on the ropes for the entirety of the match,” coach Bob Gainey said. “Maria once again displayed her precision from the baseline and strong overall play to deliver the win.”
SGI clinched the match in first doubles, where Ava Dziak and Grace Terhune won 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
In second doubles, Layla Gartler and Elle Schosek lost 6-3, 6-1. Lily Vanuga played a close first singles match and lose 7-6, 6-2.
SGI finished in second place in ECIC IV at 10-4. On Friday, Springville is sending three players to compete in the ECIC Tournament at Miller Tennis Center. Lily Vanuga will represent Springville in first singles while Maria Rumfola and Haylee Cerrone play in doubles competition.

ALDEN — Alden took all five points in a sweep on Friday, Oct. 4. Springville’s Lily Vanuga played a strong first singles match, but lost 7-5, 6-2.
In exhibition action, the duo of Emmie Weiss and Marissa Martens won 6-2.
