SGI volleyball survives tests from Maryvale, Lake Shore to stay unbeaten

SPRINGVILLE — After dropping the first set to Maryvale on Monday, the Springville-Griffith Institute varsity girls volleyball team rallied back to stay undefeated on the season.
Springville (6-0) won 14-25, 25-15, 25-19, 27-25.

Winning a tight five-set match on Tuesday, the Lady Griffs held on to their undefeated record.
SGI came out on fire in the first set. Marinna Heichberger served five aces in a row, Meghan Rehrauer slammed four kills from the middle and Ivette Lewandowski killed three. The second and third sets were closer as Lake Shore started picking up SGI’s hits. Ella Wittman (7 kills) and Marinna Heichberger kept their team focused with consistent and accurate setting. Sara Ehlers and Rachel Stressinger were the go-to hitters during all 5 sets, putting down 16 kills together.  Melanie Barry was a fierce blocker at the net shutting down the opponent’s middle five times.  Libero Jill Roggie played outstanding defense and served five aces. Kailea Sullivan took the varsity court for the first time as defensive specialist in the final two sets, serving one ace and passing for four assists.

JV Volleyball
The Springville JV volleyball team defeated the Maryvale Flyers Monday night, 2-1.  The Lady Griffs were lead by setters Sydney Fuller and Lauren Frescella, and great defense by MacKenzie Owens and Alicia Sipes. Colleen Keller served seven aces during the match.
