Local West Valley, Otto pastor to be ordained Sunday

According to the official notice posted in the Colloquies section of the May 2019 issue of the Reporter, the official newspaper of the Lutheran Church – Missour Synod (LCMS), Timothy Klahn of West Valley has completed Specific Ministry Path Pastoral Colloquy Program of the LCMS and is, therefore, eligible for a call to one or more churches.

As a result, Klahn has accepted calls to serve the congregations of Trinity Lutheran Church of West Valley and Immanuel Lutheran Church of Otto.

He will be ordained and installed at a special service to be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 10 a.m.

Klahn is a 1981 graduate of West Valley Central School and the University of Buffalo, with a degree in Medical Technology. He worked as a lab technologist and a dairy farmer for many years, but a back injury and a heart attack sent him looking for other uses for his talents.

Klahn had served as organist at Trinity Lutheran Church for many years and assisted pastors who served there. When Trinity’s pastor left in 2014, he started covering in the interim and felt a calling to pursue training, first as a licensed lay deacon (LLD), which happened in 2016, and finally to be a pastor.

In 2018, the District President asked Klahn to also cover the congregation at Immanuel, since they were also without a pastor. He has been serving both congregations ever since.

The program that Klahn followed, leading to his ordination, has been developed over the past 15 years to allow new pastors to train without having to spend time away from family and jobs to attend the seminary, and involves distance learning training and work under the supervision of an area pastor.

This development of “home-grown” pastors has helped fill a great need for pastors in the church.

The ordination and installation will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, located at 9037 Otto-East Otto Road in Otto at 10 a.m. on Aug. 18. Regular services are held there on Sundays at 11:15 a.m. Services are held at Trinity at 9:45 a.m. All are welcome to help celebrate, or attend services anytime.
