Rowe returns to states for two hurdle events; multiple school records fall

The Springville-Griffith Institute girls track and field team set two new school records, and senior Payton Rowe clinched her return to the state championships in two events last weekend in Williamsville.
Rowe, who plans to run for the University at Buffalo next year, won the Division II (small school) 400-meter hurdles on Saturday in the Section 6 championships at Williamsville South. She timed in at a season-best 1:04.39 in the 400 hurdles, and had a third-place :15.94 in the 100 hurdles. Rowe qualified for the state championships and previously finished first in both preliminaries.
The 400 relay team (Payton Rowe, Evelyn Smith, Nyah Solly, Chloe Chamberlin) set a school record twice on the weekend. On Friday, SGI broke a record set by the 2018 team (:51.09) with a :50.92. The relay team shaved off even more time on the school record on Saturday in the finals at :50.17, good for third place in the section.
Solly set an individual school record as well, recording a fourth-place distance of 16-feet-10.5-inches in the long jump, breaking Kalei Brautlacht’s record of 16-9 from 2016. Solly also took third in the triple jump (35-9.25) and eighth in the pole vault (9-0).
Springville also had two of the top-six runners in the 2,000 steeplechase. Sonya Krezmien took third with a season-best time (7:49.39) while teammate Hannah Goetz wasn’t far behind, placing sixth (8:09.66). Goetz was fifth in the 800 (2:24.13).
The Griffins’ 1,600 relay (Jaime Dickinson, Goetz, Rowe, Smith) had a season-best time of 4:14.60 for sixth.
Chloe Chamberlin had two top-seven sprints, taking fifth in the 200 (:26.96) and seventh in the 100 (:13.17).
Also for Springville, Evelyn Smith was ninth in the 200 (:27.40), Marinna Heichberger 12th in the shot put (31-5, personal record), Brooke Walker 12th in the pole vault (7-6) and Allison Emmick 14th in the high jump (4-8).

Boys Track
The SGI boys team set a new school records in both the the 400-meter relay and 400-meter dash.
Masin Field, Andrew Delasandro, Jackson Richert and Topher Elkins clocking in at :45.33 in the 400 relay and finishing in eighth place, after qualifying for the finals with a time of :45.57.
Topher Elkins finished fifth in the 400 finals with a school-record :51.06. He was also 10th in the 200 preliminaries at :23.82.
Brett Russell finished third in the 3,200 (9:53.33) and eighth in the 1,600 (4:36.24). In the same events, Jared Hecht was fourth in the 3,200 (9:57.28) and fifth in the 1,600 (4:34.02) with a personal record.
Masin Field took seventh in the triple jump (40-8.75) and had a 19-8 long jump. Dave Thompson was eighth in the shot put (42-7).
