Twin sisters Payton and Devyn Rowe made their collegiate plans official on Tuesday, and both will continue their athletic careers in different sports.

The twin Springville-Griffith Institute seniors signed letters announcing their plans in the high school library on Tuesday, joined by their parents, Jim and Teresa Rowe, and coaches. Payton Rowe plans to attend the University at Buffalo and run for the Bulls’ Division I track and field team. Devyn Rowe is set to attend SUNY Fredonia and play volleyball. Both sisters plan to major in psychology.

Payton Rowe is a two-time team MVP in both indoor and outdoor track and field. She was third in the state among small schools (Division II) last season in the 400-meter hurdles after winning the Section 6 title in that event. She holds school records in two outdoor individual events (100 hurdles, 400 hurdles) and the 400 relay and three indoor events (55 hurdles, 300 dash, 600 run) and the 800 and 1,600 relays.

SGI athletic director Joe DeMartino said only seven percent of roughly eight million high school athletes in the country go on to play NCAA athletics

“They represent seven percent of our athletes (in the country), and even at the Division I level it’s even less than that, only two percent of the eight million will go on to participate in Division I athletics,” DeMartino said. “So what an amazing accomplishment on their end, and it’s always nice to see the fruits of (their) labor.

“We couldn’t be more proud of you and we hope that you continue to keep in touch.”

Devyn Rowe won a variety of awards this season in volleyball, including most valuable defensive player by her coach and most valuable player, team leader, most defensive player and best hustler award from her teammates. She currently plays volleyball at NFVB (Niagara Frontier Volleyball).
