The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity girls basketball team dropped a non-league battle with Orchard Park Monday night, 58-33.

The girls were simply overwhelmed and didn’t play with enough toughness on the defensive end, coach Bob Gainey said.

Despite being down 17 points at halftime, the girls won the third quarter by a point thanks to playing much harder on the defensive end. Kelsey Zabawa led Springville with 12 points and Mackenzie “Kenz” Owens scored 11.

The loss drops Springville to 11-4. The Griffs were set to host JFK on Wednesday, but the game was postponed with school closed. Next up is a trip to Cleveland Hill on Friday.
