On Saturday, the Springville JV Griffins defeated the Depew Wildcats 48 – 14. The win snapped a four-game losing streak on the season for the Griffs and a three-game losing streak against the Wildcats.
Springville didn’t waste any time getting on the board as AJ Slippy scampered 67 yards to the endzone on just the second play of the game. This would be the first of four touchdowns on the day for Slippy. He scored on runs of 67, 25, 33 and 51 yards on route to a career high 227 yards rushing.
The Griffs’ ground attack was working all game long. Eric Pruitt, Alex Elkins and Elijah Jones all added rushing touchdowns for the Griffins who piled up 398 yards on the ground. The Griffs also were successful on three 2-point conversions. Pruitt ran in two of those, while Slippy had the other.
The group that really stepped it up for Springville was the offensive line who have had their struggles all year, but the collectively had their best game of the season by far.
Defensively, the Griffins were once again forcing turnovers. AJ Slippy and Nolan Longbine had interceptions, while Devin Hitchcock and Alex Elkins recovered fumbles. Three of the four turnovers led directly to Griffins touchdowns. Eric Pruitt once again led the team with 11 tackles. The win was a total team effort as 16 of the 19 Griffs who suited up for the game recorded tackles.
The win boosts the Griffins’ record to 2-4 on the season with a game against rival Pioneer scheduled for this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Pioneer.
