As the fall sports season heads into the back half, the girls’ swimming and diving team is seeing incredible success, at press time, undefeated with a 4-0 record.

“Last week Thursday we competed against Eden which is usually a close one, but we were able to build up the lead throughout and won 115-81,” said coach Karen Reynolds.

The girls, who started the season practicing at Pioneer, are back at their home in Springville, as the pool was being improved as part of SGI’s capital project.

So far, season highlights have included senior Elle Holland breaking the Pioneer pool record in the 100 backstroke. “Elle also broke our school and pool 500 free record that was placed in 2006 by Daina Bouquin,” noted Reynolds, adding that it’s a huge accomplishment to knock down a 12-year-old record.

Additionally, 14 of the team’s 24 girls qualify for ECIC’s; and 13 for class meet.

As the season goes on, Reynolds says the girls will continue to drop times.

“Right now these girls are still in their high yardage workouts to prepare them for post-season meets (taper),” she explained. “They are averaging 4,000 yards per practice and have two meets a week. They will continue to see time improvements  and I have a strong feeling more records will be coming down this season.  We are really hoping for the 200 Medley Relay record which we are 1 second away from.”

The SGI community is encouraged to come out to the SGI pool Oct. 4 for the senior meet vs. East Aurora. “We have some high hopes this season!” Reynolds said, adding that a win over them will mean they win the division.
