JV SOCCER BOYS COME FROM BEHIND TO WIN

Submitted by Coach Marty Neifergold

The Springville boys JV soccer team had an epic game on Tuesday against Lackawanna.  Both teams had several chances early in the game, but neither team was able to put a goal in early on.
In the 28th minute, the visiting Steelers finally capitalized on an opportunity and made the score 1-0 in their favor.  Four minutes later, Lackawanna scored again to double their lead.  With a little under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Lackawanna scored for the third time to give the Steelers a 3-0 lead at halftime.
With a few minor changes, the Griffins returned to the field battered and bruised, but ready to play the second half.  In the fifth minute of the half, freshman Hunter Keem started the Springville rally with a goal that the Steeler keeper could not handle.  The Griffins had a corner kick two and a half minutes later and Hunter scored again out of the scrum that ensued.  Now everyone could feel that the momentum had shifted in Springville’s favor.
Less than two minutes after the second Springville goal, Ben Sullivan let a long shot go from the right side of the field.  It was a rocket of a shot that hit the top corner of the net and tied the game at three.  The fans and players were now whipped into a frenzy and could feel that there would be more scoring.
In the 17th minute, Garon Holland scored off an assist from Daniel Garnett to complete the comeback.  Now the Griffins still had about 24 agonizingly slow minutes to hang on for the win.  Although the Steelers applied more pressure, Austin Boies in goal and the stingy defense were up to the task and hung on for the 4-3 Springville victory.  This improves the boys JV record to 7-2-0 for the season.  Their next game is at home next week on Tuesday, Oct. 2 against Alden.
