SGI’s varsity girls’ volleyball team is on their way to a successful season.

“Right now, we have all seniors starters, including a junior libero,” said coach Carolyn Bell, who took the position over this season from longtime coach Kristin Hughey.

Bell noted that their bench is deep as well,  with two very talented sophomores, Rachel Stressinger and Sara Ehlers.

“We are fortunate to have a strong and seasoned setter (Meadow Wittman) to run our offense,” she said. “She has great ball handling skills. She keeps improving with her footwork and timing.  I am anticipating that she will be one of the best setters in the division by the season’s end.”

Rounding out the team’s other standout players, Bell said that, “Our highest percentage attacker is our middle blocker Allie Emmick.  In our last set she finished with a .75 percent hitting average which is a huge accomplishment at any level for any hitter. Devyn Rowe and Morgan Christ are our strongest servers with 7 and 5 aces recorded in our last match, respectively.”

Bell feels that the team’s strength is their ball handling control and versatile offense.  “Our biggest areas of improvement include having to become more aggressive on defense and being more vocal,” she said. “The players are learning a new system with a new coach and I am so proud of the progress they have made in such a short period of time.”

While she says the team has a long way to go to be the team she knows they can become, Bell added that “The players are so eager to learn so it makes my job fun!”

Last week Thursday, Springville defeated Mount Mercy in three sets:

25-9

25-16

25-12

Springville came out strong,  showing excellent ball control, and implemented a newer and faster offense successfully.  Highlights included 24 sets assists, 5 kills, and 8 service aces from senior, Meadow Wittman.  Wittman, a starter and integral part of the Springville offense, just signed to play volleyball at SUNY Cortland.  Other standouts tonight were Devyn Rowe and Morgan Christ with each earning 11 kills.  Both Allie Emmick and Abby Stressinger earned 3 blocks each to dominate the defense on the net.  Finally, the team was supported by our only starting junior, Emily Ehlers with a career high of 16 digs. Overall, Springville volleyball is starting to really come together as one unit.

The following day, Springville came out strong right away against against Holland. Offensively,  Springville implemented new offensive free ball plays successfully and had a top notch serving game that consistently put Holland out of system, making it very difficult to score.  What was really impressive was how the underclassman significantly contributed to tonight’s win, including sophomores Sara Ehlers and Rachel Stressinger. Both stepped on the court with service aces and impressive serve receive passing and aggressive attacking. The night’s highlights included 14 set assists, 5 kills and 4 service aces from senior, Meadow Wittman.  Other standouts were Allie Emmick and Morgan Christ, who had an impressive hitting percentage of .50 and .60, respectively.  Devyn Rowe came in with a team high of nine digs.

On Tuesday, Springville defeated Cleveland Hill in three sets:

25-21

25-10

25-14

Current record: 5 wins and 1 loss

Springville Volleyball continues to be one of the top teams in their division with another impressive three-set sweep against Cleveland Hill at home. Cleveland Hill was defensively very strong, but Springville was able to overcome their “scrappy play” with a strong offensive attack from all hitters.  Defensively, Springville was picking up every tip and attack that Cleveland Hill gave them causing them to make several unforced errors. Tonight’s highlights include 4 kills from Morgan Christ, 3 solo blocks from Abby Stressinger, 9 service aces and 10 digs from Meadow Wittman, all seniors. Springville Volleyball currently stands at 5 wins and only 1 loss to the top ranked Eden.
