The JV boys’ soccer team played two games last week—Wednesday at St. Francis and Thursday we were home to Eden. The game scheduled for Saturday against North Collins was cancelled because North Collins did not have enough players.
On Wednesday, they travelled to St. Francis and took on a solid squad. After a scoreless first half, the Red Raiders scored the first goal of the game 15 minutes into the second half. About 10 minutes later, freshman Hunter Keem was tripped inside the St. Francis penalty box. This resulted in a penalty kick that Charlie DiGangi put in the net to tie the score at one. There was no more scoring in regulation.
Overtime saw chances by both sides. Springville moved a defender up to help the attack, but there was no scoring in the first 10 minute overtime period. The second overtime period had goalie Austin Boies come out of goal and play on the field in an attempt to add more offense and score a goal to win the sudden-death overtime period. The move backfired though as St. Francis scored on a scramble in front of the Griffins net to win the game 2-1. This gave Springville their first loss of the season.
The next day, the Griffins bounced back against the Eden Raiders winning a tight game 1-0 to improve their record to 6-1 for the season. The Griffins had the better part of the play and better chances than Eden, but could not find the back of the net until the middle of the second half. Daniel Garnett gave a nice pass to Garon Holland who went in on the Eden goalkeeper all alone. Garon scored the only goal of the game to put Springville back in the win column.
