The boys JV soccer team improved to 5-0-0 on Friday, Sept. 7 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Alden.
It was a very intense and close game all the way through. When it started, the Bulldogs had the better part of the play, applying much pressure to the Springville team. The Griffins were able to shake off that pressure and much more throughout the rest of the game by playing the bend-but-don’t- break defense.
In the 22nd minute of the first half, freshman Hunter Keem was tripped inside the Alden penalty box, resulting in a penalty shot for the Griffins. Co-captain Cameron Denny calmly kicked the ball low and out of reach of the home team’s goalkeeper to give Springville a 1-0 lead. The rest of the half saw chances by both teams, but the half ended with Springville up 1-0.
The second half had more of the same— chances on both sides and some really good defensive plays. Springville’s Austin Boies played excellent in goal to record his fourth shutout of the season and the entire team chipped in with a great effort to preserve the win.
The Griffins played at St. Francis on Wednesday, were home to Eden on Thursday and finish the week with a home game against North Collins on Saturday.
