The America East Conference has released its list of Presidential Scholar-Athletes for the 2017-18 academic year and 2015 SGI grad Jessica Wiede made the list while at at SUNY Binghamton. Wiede, who just earned her Bachelor’s degree in human development with a minor in education in only three years, is continuing on for her Master’s at Binghamton, where she is eligible to compete in her chosen weight throwing field events for one more year.

The America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete award recognizes graduating student-athletes who compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher as an undergraduate student and earned their undergraduate degrees this year. In addition to registering a 3.75 GPA for their college career, honored student-athletes must have received their undergraduate degree in the academic year they are honored and have attended their institution for a minimum of two years.

Wiede said she learned two important lessons while having SGI PE teacher Mark Heichberger as her high school track coach. “If you want to do well at something, you have to dedicate your time to it,” she said, noting that Heichberger instilled in her the need to work hard and be committed. Wiede said this carried into college for not only athletics, but also her academics.

The second lesson Wiede took with her from high school was to have self confidence. “There were times that I didn’t believe in myself, and Coach H would say ‘I know you can do it,’” she said. “I gained self confidence and it helped me compete.”
