Officials at the Springville Area Chamber of Commerce are planning a new monthly event in hopes of showcasing local businesses in a fun and exciting way.
The free event, currently called Shop Local in the Park, will take place the last Wednesday of each month from 5 to 8 p.m. in Heritage Park near Franklin Street in downtown Springville. It’ll feature live music and local food and businesses.
The first event will be held this upcoming Wednesday, June 27.
“Basically what we want to do is focus on making shopping local,” said chamber director Ashley Zielinski. “The hours vary for businesses on Main Street so we wanted to designate a day to have everyone in one place.”
Chamber members will be able to set up a vendor table for free the first month of the event, and non-chamber members can set up a table for $10. Zielinski said the chamber hopes to keep the event free each month for chamber members as an incentive to join the chamber, but that will be decided following the first event on Wednesday.
Early this week, Zielinski said she expects about a dozen vendors in the first event. Attendees will be able to browse vendor tables, listening to live music and enjoy activities like facepainting.
While the focus will be on shopping for vendors, organizations like The Club of Springville are also expected to be in attendance to get information about their group out to the community.
Zielinski said Wednesday evenings were chosen to not impact the Thursday night concert at the park series and also to build off the momentum from the auction that takes place during the day on Wednesdays.
“The auction is Wednesday so we hope this will keep people in town,” she said.
While determining the response of the first Shop Local in the Park will help chamber officials learn how to improve it, current plans are for the event to be held all year ‘round, including during the winter months, Zielinski said.
The chamber is also looking for an official name for the event, and posted a request for suggestions on Facebook. Zielinski said there will also be a box at the event for people to suggest names.
