Although it was perhaps a bit later than they would have liked, the SGI varsity baseball team on Monday played its home opener that couldn’t have went any better — the thermometer hit 70 degrees, the sun was shining and they won their first game of the season.
A 7-1 win against East Aurora opened the season at Concord Community Park, which less than a week prior had been buried under early spring snowfall.
The Griffins (1-4) were led in pitching by senior Dan Robertson, who also went 4-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. Senior Evan Elkins tallied three hits and four players had two hits.
The win against East Aurora was the only one so far for the Griffins through press time on Wednesday.
Springville’s game on Tuesday at home against Pioneer was a back-and-forth contest, with the Griffins jumping out early with a 2-0 lead in the first inning and extending it to 3-0 entering the sixth.
Pioneer took the lead with a four-run sixth inning before the Griffins regained it, 5-4, in the bottom of the inning. But three runs in the seventh for the Panthers sealed the come-from-behind win.
The Griffins also lost, 10-4, in Olean on Saturday.
Winning pitcher Dylan Vincent for Olean went six innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven batters and walking two. Shaun Wright finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Springville.
