If we didn’t have calendars, it would be hard to believe that spring is well underway.  Even though the flowers’ stalks have yet to ascend and many yards still have random piles of old man winter scattered about, the outdoor sports seasons have arrived!

Few things are better than seeing your child unplug from the Matrix and enjoy one another’s company in person while working to get better at a given physical activity.  The joy you see on your child’s face when they finish in the top 5 on “Fortnite” is vastly exceeded by the accomplishment they feel when their family takes the time to watch them perform in real life.

The Springville Little League Football Program has started to accept online registrations for your child to join an incredible group of kids for the 2018 season.  This season, the SLLF Griffins will compete as part of the Empire West League. The move from CCMFL to EWYFCA came as part of a parent vote after hearing from three leagues vying for our participation.  The Empire West League was picked in large part due to the closer competition and the higher level of player safety. A representative from the EWYFCA stated that they “are excited to have us join their league.”

The Springville program will have their annual golf tournament on June 10 at Holland Hills Country Club. It’s important to have a great turn out for the event, as the SLLF is adding a 6- and 7-year-old tackle football team this year, adding the need to purchase smaller equipment.  You can also use this event as a chance to speak directly with people involved with the league, from players to parents and volunteers.

I spoke with a few players from the Griffins 2017 CCMFL Superbowl B championship- winning Griffins team to see what they had to say about playing football.

Tyler Meade (OL,DL) says, “I really like muddy practices because we can slide around and get covered in mud!”  He added, “I like to push and rush through the gap on defense and then BAM!! Make a sack or help with a tackle. My brothers and I all think the best part about playing football is the awesome feeling we get after the game when we know we did our best together as a team, win or lose, it’s not easy but it’s worth it!”

My son, Rowen Oakley (RB, LB) stated that his favorite part of football is, “either making an open field tackle, or when I see the LB running at me and then I give him ‘da jukes’ on my way to a touchdown!”

Empire West Youth Football and Cheer is player-centered and their goal is to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive experience for each child. The league uses four divisions to ensure players are competing against like-sized and minded youth.

“Pee Wee” is ages 7 and under, “Freshman” are ages 9 and under, “JV” is ages 11 and under, and “Varsity” division has players ages 13 and under.
