It appears work on a new Emerling car dealership won’t be the only construction on South Cascade Drive this year, as the neighboring Aldi grocery store this summer will expand to feature an improved shopping experience.

The Aldi store, which opened in September 2009, will close in July for a remodel and open in August with about 2,000 more square feet of selling space, according to Aaron Sumida, Aldi Tully division vice president.

“The remodeled Springville store will have five aisles and about 12,000 square feet of selling space, compared to the store’s current layout, which features four aisles and about 10,000 square feet of selling space,” Sumida said.

Tim Scheg, of APD Engineering & Architecture and representing Aldi, presented to the Springville Village Board in February to explain the site plan, which the board unanimously approved at the meeting. He stated Aldi sought to erect a 19-foot-4-inch addition on the entire south side and a 9-foot-6-inch expansion on the east side.

It was noted the scope of the work for the project will be done to incorporate the latest Aldi store layouts, according to minutes of the planning board meeting. The zoning board of appeals had unanimously granted Aldi an area variance for lot coverage in January.

“The new look of Aldi delivers on our customers’ desire for a modern and convenient shopping experience with a focus on fresh items, including more robust produce, dairy and bakery sections,” Sumida told the Springville Times. “Remodeled stores also feature open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials such as recycled materials, energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting.”

The village board in February learned that, in addition to the store expansion and remodel, external site work will take place, including new parking lot configuration, updated LED site lighting and sealing and restriping of the parking lot.

“We can’t wait to bring the new look of ALDI to shoppers who know and love us in Springville, plus new fans,” Sumida said.
