If you’re looking for your daily dose of caffeine and deliciousness, look no further than 49 Coffee House & Eatery, which officially opened its doors last weekend. The building, which also houses Molly’s Creative Cuts, was purchased in late 2016 by Greg Beatty, his cousin, Kevin Buncy, and Kevin’s wife, Lindsay, all SGI grads.
Named after its location at 49 East Main St. in the heart of downtown Springville, 49 Coffee House is a result of hard work and determination after months of renovations and a vision. “Lindsay is a coffee fanatic and liked the idea of a coffee shop,” said Kevin of their decision to open a business in Springville. He said, and Beatty agreed, that there was never a question of whether they would end up in Springville after graduating from high school.
“There’s so much potential here,” Kevin said of being in downtown Springville. The trio began major renovations on the building and, in addition to the coffee house, luxury apartments are planned for the second floor, which Beatty and Buncy hope will be completed by summer.
49 Coffee House boasts not only a wide selection of coffee and tea, but also baked goods from up and coming baker Annie Coe, known for her Cupcaked storefront which opened last year in the heart of Ellicottville.
Kevin explained that when the trio began looking for local bakers to partner with, Lindsay reached out to Coe.
“She was super friendly and interested in working with us,” Kevin said. The initial conversation led to an impressive assortment of baked goods that will be regularly stocked by Coe, including a variety of tasty cupcakes and cake pops, signature blueberry lemon and orange cranberry scones, as well as gluten free options like brownies with vanilla or peanut butter frosting and giant cookies.
Coe is not the only local vendor the 49 Coffee staff will be working with. Once their full food menu is available, which Beatty and Buncy said will be in a couple weeks, they will be working with local barbecue legend Jake Cranston of Jake and the Fatman, who will supply the pulled pork for a specialty sandwich that includes pork with Jake’s signature BBQ sauce, topped with housemade mac and cheese and pickles on sourdough bread.
Other mouth-watering sandwich selections include three paninis made with waffles instead of bread — Buffalo chicken, blueberry and BLT with pesto. “All three are incredible,” Kevin said.
The syrup for the sweet paninis will soon be supplied by Jake Miller, who owns Jake’s Greenhouse in East Concord. The syrup will also be incorporated into other food items such as maple coleslaw.
Of course, a coffee house is known for its beverages, and 49 Coffee takes pride in using locally roasted coffee beans sourced from Golden Cup Coffee in Buffalo. Kevin explained that their house blend, called 1808 The Settler, is named after the first permanent settler in Springville. The medium-roast coffee is an Ethiopian/Honduras mix, and is available in bags to take home as well.
Another popular option is the Nitro Cold Brew, which is brewed at room temperature for 14 hours, infused with nitrogen and poured from a tap. The result is a creamy, carbonated strong brew, with a head much like that on a glass of stout beer.
49 Coffee also offers loose leaf tea, fruit smoothies, bottled beverages, decaf options and, in the future, might work toward making their own soda.
While Kevin also owns and runs a painting business, he plans to work at the coffee house in the afternoons and evenings, and both Lindsay and Beatty will be there full time, and also have assistance from two current employees.
Opening weekend proved to be a success. “There were rushes of people. It was great,” said Kevin.
Among the short-term goals, Kevin and Beatty agree that perfecting the food, adding Monday hours and bringing on another employee top the list.
49 Coffee House is open Tuesdays-Fridays, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m; and Sundays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For now, they are closed on Mondays, but agree that there is a strong possibility that will change in the near future.
