12-21-17 SGI Coaches Corner

Girls’ Varsity Basketball, Coach Bob Gainey

The Varsity Girls Basketball team pulled off a big upset Monday night by defeating City Honors 34-27. The girls’ defense was incredible throughout the game, holding the opposition to only seven points at halftime.

Despite leading by six, the girls found themselves down by four points going into the 4th quarter. That’s when Ivette Lewandowski decided to take the game over by scoring none of her game-high 19 points in the final eight minutes.

Besides Ivette’s scoring, there’s no way the team would have been able to come back without the toughness of Ryan Stedman, Bella Oakley, Kelsey Zabawa and Mackenzie Engel. Those girls did a great job holding their top scorer (27 points per game) to 17 points.

Nyah Solly gave her team a big boost with her hustle on defense, as did Sydney Rosati. The game was competitive throughout and the Griffs finally got a little separation after a Grace Zabawa layup in transition. Other scorers on the night included: Sydney Rosati (4 points), Grace Zabawa (4 points), Bella Oakley (3 points) and Leah Frank (2 points). The girls are now 2-1 and return to action when they host MEC in the Emerling Tourney. Great job girls!

Girls’ JV Baksetball, Coach Chris Mathewson

Monday night, the girls’ JV basketball team improved their record to 2-1 with their second straight win, defeating host City Honors 42-20.  Meg Rehrauer led the Griffs with 12 points, followed by Gracie Attebery with seven points, and Rachel O’Neal and Marie Emerling with six points each.

Wrestling, Coach Mark Vogel

The Griffin wrestlers lost a tough battle to Eden last Wednesday, 37-30.  Leading the way with pins for the Griffs were Mikey Evans, Nick Brown and Hayden Taylor.  Jared Hecht wrestled his best match of the year in a close loss and Jake Bystryk fought until the end in a tough loss to a familiar opponent.

Over the weekend, Mikey Evans took third place at ECIC’s, held at Starpoint HS.  Weather turned the contest into a one day tournament rather than a Friday-Saturday tournament.  Because of this, the tournament dropped the first two rounds to single elimination, making it difficult for any unseeded wrestlers.  Mikey Evans lost an exciting semifinals match 8-6 to last year’s Section VI Champion for Division I from Lancaster.  Mikey battled back strong and won the consolation finals 10-0 to finish the tournament with a record of 3-1.  Nate Cottom and Jake Bystryk wrestled hard against seeded wrestlers but came up short in the end.

Several wrestlers participated in the North Tonawanda JV tournament.  Sam Weber placed 4th at 106 pounds and younger brother Nate Weber earned his first pin at 99 lbs.  Other wrestlers earning victories throughout the day were Shilo Rogers, Nick Brown and John Andreef.
