This week, Elle Holland, a junior at SGI on the Varsity Girls Swim team, will be attending the New York State Swimming and Diving meet held at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. She will be leaving Thursday morning and competing Friday and Saturday .
This is Elle’s second year attending the NYS Meet and she is excited about returning back this season as a stronger and more confident swimmer. She qualified in three individual events; however, she can only swim in two because of the rules in swimming. She has chosen to swim in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke events. Going into the preliminaries, Elle is ranked 59/64 in backstroke and ranked 36/69 in the freestyle. The top 30 return back for finals on Saturday.
Qualifying for states is the result of Elle’s hard work all season, one in which she’s made some great memories.
“One of my favorite memories of this season was when I finished my 100 backstroke at ECICs,” said Elle. “I didn’t know what the cut time was, nor that I had gotten it, but I was turned around and saw my coaches and my mom jumping up and down—that was one of the most surreal moments ever.”
“We see the dedication and sacrifices Elle makes to train and are so proud of her drive,” said Elle’s mother, Heather. “The sport has taught her a lot, lessons she’ll take into real life. We’re proud and blessed parents!”
Elle noted that her achievements are due to many factors. “I’ve really come to learn this season that success doesn’t only lie in hard work, but in confidence as well,” she said. “I’ve swam some of my best races the year when I just had the mentality of going out and trying my best. Thank you everyone who has supported my this season and in the past— I wouldn’t be where I am without the great motivators beside me.”
Good luck to Elle as she continues to chase her dreams!
