Last Friday, the Springville Griffins varsity football team played host to the Dunkirk Marauders for the home opener to the 2017 season.  The festivities began with spectators arriving earlier than normal at Pop Warner field.  Some cheerleaders handed out pom poms and team flags while others painted faces.  Many kids and parents tried their hand and the “Kan Jam” and “Bag Toss” set ups in the field.

The Marauders had a large fan base that made the hour-long drive down Route 39 to enjoy a night. The weather was mild and the patrons were jovial right up until the game began.

It didn’t take long for those present to see that the Griffins were greatly overmatched.  The Marauders connected on an 80-yard pass for a quick 7 – 0  lead and never looked back.  Springville showed signs of life when they moved the chains multiple times on a long drive that ended with a touchdown and successful 2-point conversion by Jeremy Baker.

Unfortunately, the ensuing kickoff was returned by Dunkirk’s Issiah Velez 75 yards for an immediate 7-point response.  This was the 2nd special teams touchdown the Griffins have surrendered in as many games.

As the seconds ticked down on the second quarter, the skies began to pour a chilling rain on those in attendance and the Griffins entered halftime with a 16 point deficit.  The contest ended 31 – 8 in favor of the Marauders, dropping the hometown Griffins to a record of 0 – 2.

Springville has another chance to get their first win of the season this Friday, Sept. 15, in their 2017 homecoming game versus the Depew Wildcats.  Depew is also 0 – 2, having lost to the same two teams as the Griffins.  As of now, the weather looks as though it will be a perfect day to spend in the village supporting your Griffs.  The town will be buzzing with activity as Homecoming celebrations bring the smiles of a community together.  The Homecoming parade begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Pop Warner Induction at 6:30 and capped off by week 3 kickoff at 7 p.m.
