JV Football, Coach Brian Kader
Saturday morning, the JV Football Griffins opened up their season on Pop Warner Field against the visiting Lackawanna Steelers. The Griffins, captained this year by sophomores Nick Emmick and David Thompson, fought hard but ultimately fell to the Steelers by a final score of 22 – 0. A back and forth first half saw both teams struggle offensively until Lackawanna scored in the waning seconds to take a 6 – 0 lead into the break.
The Griffs opened up the second half with a defensive stop followed by a huge play where they tackled the Steelers’ punter for a 25 yard loss on a bad snap. Despite taking possession deep in Lackawanna territory, the Griffs were unable to score. Lackawanna scored again at the end of the third quarter to take a 14-0 lead and capped off the scoring late in the 4th quarter with an interception return for a touchdown.
Devin Hitchcock led the Griffins running attack with 34 yards, while Alex Elkins, AJ Slippy, Nick Emmick and Jeff Heim also chipped in on the ground. Eric Pruitt hauled in the lone reception for Griffin receivers on a 4th down conversion late in the game.
This year’s Griffins return four starters from last year’s group and just nine players overall from the 2016 roster. With so many fresh faces, there will be some growing pains, but there are plenty of signs for hope as the team improved steadily through the three-week training camp.
The JV Griffins will go on the road to Dunkirk this Saturday, Sept. 9 for a 10 a.m. start in search of their first win.
JV Girls’ Volleyball, Coach Bob Gainey
The JV girls volleyball team traveled to Lake Shore on Wednesday night and came away with a 2-1 victory. The girls started off a little slowly in the first game but found their footing midway through as Meg Rehrauer controlled action at the net and Alyssa Hunter led the team with excellent passing and communication skills to bring home the 25-20 win. Game two was cleaner as Sara Ehlers served out 8 straight points to help the girls to the win. Marie Emerling was fantastic in the back row and Rachel Stressinger set and hit the ball well. Despite the game 3 loss the girls never quit and saw solid contributions from Jill Roggie and Ivette Lewandowski. The girls are now 1-0 on the young season and have their first home match of the year on Monday when Maryvale comes to town. Congrats girls!!!
