In the wake of Hurricane Harvey and the devastation it has left and continues to leave in Texas, many are left wondering how they can help. Here is an overview of some of the organizations in need of assistance for their relief efforts:
The American Red Cross is urging people to call 1-800-RED CROSS or text HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation for those in need.
Samaritan’s Purse mobilizes staff and equipment and enlists thousands of volunteers to provide emergency aid to victims of tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other natural disasters in the United States. They often stay behind after our initial response to rebuild or restore houses for needy families. Donate or sign up to volunteer at spvolunteernetwork.samaritanspurse.org
The Salvation Army is ready to provide physical, emotional and spiritual care to survivors and relief workers. Salvation Army disaster teams from across the country are mobilizing and, even after disaster response efforts are over, The Salvation Army will remain in communities impacted by this terrible storm, supporting long-term disaster recovery efforts and providing ongoing assistance to those in need. Get updates on relief efforts at www.disaster.salvationarmyusa.org, follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SalArmyEDS, or on Twitter @SalArmyEDS. Donate at www.salvationarmyusa.org.
Heart to Heart International strengthens communities through improving health access, providing humanitarian development and administering crisis relief worldwide. We engage volunteers, collaborate with partners and deploy resources to achieve this mission. Donate at www.hearttoheart.org.
Global Giving (www.globalgiving.org) believes “that organizations that are deeply-rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors. All donations to this fund will support recovery and relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet survivors’ immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once initial relief work is complete, this fund will transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations in the Gulf Coast.”
GoFundMe also has highlighted stories of people who are suffering as a result of Harvey.
