Celebrate the Unofficial End of Summer This Labor Day

The unofficial end of summer comes and goes this weekend with Labor Day. Celebrated the first Monday in September, Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Reward your hard work with a day of play, and choose from special events and places all over Western New York before school is back in session.

This long weekend is your last chance of the season to head to the Holiday Valley pool complex, open only through Labor Day Monday. Join in some special activities that include:

Friday, Sept. 1, 5 p.m. Hula Hoop Contest, 6 p.m. Cornhole Tournament.

Saturday, Sept. 2, 2 p.m. Frozen T-shirt Breakout, 3 p.m. Ducky Derby, 4 p.m. Volleyball, 6 p.m. Cannonball Contest.

Sunday, Sept 3, 1 p.m. Water Balloons, 3 p.m. Ducky Derby, 4 p.m. Jenga Tournament.

Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, 2 p.m. Frozen T-shirt Breakout, 3 p.m. Ducky Derby, 4 p.m. Jumbo Volleyball.

On Sunday, Sept. 3, head to Letchworth State Park for the Summer Farewell Festival, featuring live music, family activities, food and fireworks! The festival funs from 3 to 9:30 p.m. Go early and enjoy a hike along the gorge.

On Monday, Letchworth offers a variety of programs.

Take part in the Geology Walk at 10 a.m. Geology, history and nature lore are the subjects of a walk along the changing path of the Lower Falls. Muddy spots and lots of steps. Meet by octagon building at Lower Falls parking lot, past Cabin Area “B.”

That same day, learn How the Gorge was Formed- The Story of the Park at 12:30 p.m. Follow short, paved walkways accessible to wheelchairs and learn about geology, glacial and human history laced with plants and animals. Meet at Inspiration Point parking lot.

At 2 p.m., take the Glen Iris Estate Walk. Visit the home and grounds of William Pryor Letchworth. Plants and animals will be highlighted along a historical walk from the museum, past the Glen Iris and to the Middle and Upper Falls before returning to the museum. Meet at the Museum.

Animal lovers can say goodbye to summer and hello to a fun-filled Labor Day at the Zoo! The event will feature exciting activities, animal feedings and more. For more info, visit www.buffalozoo.org.

Sept. 2-4, enjoy the Labor Day Harvest Festival at Becker Farms. Bring your family to celebrate the fall harvest, and enjoy  U-pick apples, hayrides, pony rides, music, chicken BBQ and tons of old fashioned family fun.

You can also spend Labor Day Monday celebrating the annual hop harvest and our regional German heritage at Genesee Country Village & Museum. Enjoy live music and dancing all day, barrel rolls, sack races and special tastings of craft beer in the historic village. Enjoy German foods and help harvest our hops, then relax with a glass of craft beer or cider. And don’t miss as we demonstrate the 19th century beer-making process in the brewery, along with special food tastings in the village kitchens. Families welcome, fun for all ages!
