By Alicia Dziak
Growing up in Holland, NY, the annual Tulip Festival was one of the highlights of the year. It always included a stop by the craft fair to pick out a Mother’s Day gift, stopping by the Historical Society building to see my mom and their display for the Erie County Fair in August, going on amusement rides with my friends and of course, watching the parade. (Sometimes I’d be in the parade, but that’s a whole other story!)
When I was in kindergarten, I got to walk on stage with that year’s Tulip Queen (who also happened to be named Alicia), and when I was a senior, I stepped way out of my comfort zone and participated in the Tulip Queen pageant myself. All in all, over the years, the Tulip Festival was something I grew up being a part of every year, and to this day, I still try to get there to share it with my kids.
As one of the earliest small-town festivals of the year, the Holland Tulip Fest will be held May 11-13. With a theme of “Where Tulips Meet,” there’s really something for everyone, whether you live in Holland or not!
