At Truvy’s beauty shop, where the motto is “There is no such thing as natural beauty,” you can find six women who gather there often, gossiping about the latest happenings. The show opens with chit-chat on the big event happening that day in Chinquapin, Louisiana — Shelby’s wedding.
Steel Magnolias follows friends through the next three years with all of the ups and downs of life. These women may be filled with spitfire, wit, and stubbornness, but they support each other through thick and thin.
This comedy-drama has humor throughout the show, but there is sadness and loss as well.
The show is directed by Tom Durham, who previously helmed Loose Lips Sink Ships and Proof at the Center, along with many plays at Aurora Players and throughout Western New York.
Many are familiar with the 1989 movie, which was adapted from Robert Harling’s 1987 play of the same name. Surrounded by friendship and love, these women are faced with life’s challenges from men to faith to medical battles.
Steel Magnolias takes the stage at the Carol Mongerson Theater, 37 North Buffalo Street, Springville on May 11, 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. and May 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for Students and Seniors and $12 General.
