Varsity Girls Basketball, coach Bob Gainey

The Varsity Girls basketball team had a eventful holiday break. The girls took their first league win on the year when they played host to the Lackawanna Steelers. The girls won that game 58-26 behind the hot shooting of Sydney Rosati and Ivette Lewandowski as they combined for 30 points. The girls were scheduled to play host to Oracle Charter School in the opening round of the Emerling Tourney, but the opposing team ended up forfeiting which put the Lady Griffs in the title game against the Pioneer Panthers. Despite a great defensive effort, the girls struggled mightily through the night on offense as they dropped a hard fought game by a score of 29-27. All tournament honors were handed out to Lexi Sopko and Julia Krzemien. Also, Carrie Dickinson chipped in nine points in the losing effort.

The girls traveled to Tonawanda on Tuesday night and came away with a dramatic 31-29 victory. The girls started the game off going down 9-2 in the first quarter but stormed back to take a two- point lead at halftime behind the excellent defensive effort and sharp shooting by Sydney Rosati. The girls found themselves in big foul trouble early in the third quarter as Lexi Sopko and Julia Krzemien each picked up their fourth fouls early. Having those girls off the floor helped Tonawanda move ahead of the Griffs and eventually take an eight-point lead. The girls wouldn’t quit though, as they stormed back by playing great team defense and making timely shots to pull ahead. Ivette Lewandowski drained a three pointer off of a perfect pass from Julia Krzemien to put the team up by two with 36 seconds left. The girls hung on for the big win with an emphatic blocked shot by Krzemien to seal the win. The girls would not have won the game without the tremendous contributions by all team members, which included great hustle by Ryan Stedman, toughness exhibited by Maddie Pazzuti, strong interior defense of MacKenzie Engel, the speed and quickness underneath by Leah Frank, and the outstanding hustle by Lexi Sopko. Leading scorers on the night were: Sydney Rosati with nine points, Ivette Lewandowski with seven points, Julia Krzemien with seven points, Carrie Dickinson with six points, and Lexi Sopko with two points. The girls are now a perfect 2-0 in league play. Great job girls!
