On Jan. 1, 2017, Allegany’s 1st Day Hike offers a healthy way for people of all ages to get outside and enjoy the winter beauty of the area. This self-guided hike will take place in the Summit Area in the Red House side of the park. The off-trail hike, approximately 2 miles in length and easy to moderate in intensity, begins at the Summit Warming Hut, follows scenic ridgeline to Stone Tower, then loops back to the Warming Hut. Interpretive points of interest can be found along the way. Come listen to birds, feel the warmth of the sun or the coldness of the snow. This 1st Day Hike will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants should begin the hike by stopping in the Summit Warming Hut to sign in and pick up a trail map. Be sure to dress in appropriate winter hiking apparel. Weather permitting, snowshoes and trekking poles are encouraged. After the hike, be sure to swing back in the warming hut for a New Year’s Social with chili and warm beverages provided by the Friends of Allegany State Park.
