Thursday, Jan. 19, 12:45 following lunch, Eden Heights will present “Plan Ahead: Learn your Options” to present the many choices for rehabilitation, assisted living, and memory care. FREE.
Friday, Jan. 20, 10 a.m. Are you, or do you know, a grandparent/aunt/brother, etc raising a relative? Gateway-Longview’s Kinship Caregiver Support Program provides a comprehensive array of services to the increasing number of kinship caregivers who provide parental support to children, to minimize the stress associated with kinship care, while bolstering the relationship between the care provider and child or children. Kinship Caregiver Support services include: mentoring; skill building support; tutoring & educational assistance; home-based counseling; and visitation support. First Weds of every month FREE Respite Care for Memory Impaired
This program held at the First United Methodist Church allows caregivers a well-deserved and much-needed break from caregiving duties for their loved ones. Memory-impaired guests are partnered with a volunteer (trained by Alzheimer’s Association) and together they participate in various activities in a secure environment, while caregivers are free to take care of themselves for a few hours. Lunch and snacks are provided (also by volunteers). Held at First United Methodist Church, 474 E. Main St., Springville, NY. Call 592-7451 or SCENe 592-2768 to register.
FREE Open Needle Knitting & Crochet Club – 1st Friday and 3rd Wednesday monthly 10:30 am Bring your own yarn, needles, and projects in the works, or get a new pattern or project! ALL levels welcome to share the fun, whether learning/ beginner/ experienced. If beginner, knitting needles sz 8 are suggested or crochet needle size G or H. No need to sign up in advance – just come if your schedule allows!
FREE Euchre Club – Meets Thursdays 1 p.m. – come enjoy fun play with great people.
FREE Garden Club – Meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 10:30 a.m., at the Concord Senior Center. New members always welcome! Share your love and passion for gardening. Garden Club members maintain community gardens and pocket parks, and often assist area organizations with things such as centerpiece arrangements, fun field trips, etc. 2017 Garden Walk is in the works, too!
FREE Caregiver Support Group – Feel like you could use a little support and help in your caregiving duties for a loved one? Join us the first and third Monday every month at 3pm at Concord Senior Center. You’re not alone – experiences of others can help share burdens and lighten your load.
FREE Sit & Be Fit Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. at Concord Senior Center. Gentle video exercises help awaken your muscles, and the camaraderie of neighbors helps awaken your sense that exercise is fun!
FREE Discussion Group meets every 2nd and 4th Friday at 10:30 a.m. (not Dec. 23) at Concord Senior Center as a relaxed and fun way to come together for the social aspect of simply meeting, visiting and talking with others. Topics range widely from current events; to memories and traditions of holidays; to travel experiences. So enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and the company of friends!
FREE Book Club meets the third Tuesday of the month 1-2 p.m. at Concord Senior Center for fun and invigorating discussion. December will be Auschwitz Escape by Joe Rosenberg; January will be The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams; February will be The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne; and March will discuss Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte – Schedule subject to change based on book availability. We’d love to have you join us.
Check out the new Resource Center in the dining hall of the Concord Senior Center – binders and lots of information for you to peruse on a wide array of topics. If you need assistance, just ask SCENe.
SCENe’s office hours will be changing for 2017 – check the office door for schedule (roughly 9-4 Tues. and 9-noon Wed. with some fluctuation), and definitely leave a message anytime at 592-2768.
Senior Center Photo Exhibit and Contest! Check out the photos in the Senior Center hallway for all to view and enjoy into February, and vote for your favorite.
The Concord Senior Center is also home to Stay Fit Dining – a healthy nutritious meal served at noon. Currently serving lunch every Monday and Thursday, the program HOPES TO EXPAND to be offered daily, but needs your advance reservations to do so!! Call 592-2741 or 592-7580 to make your lunch reservations. Due to the part-time nature of the Concord schedule, reservations must be made two weeks in advance! A confidential contribution of $3 is suggested, but no one will be denied a meal if unable to contribute – all contributions provide more meals to participants. Open to Erie County residents who are 60 or older and their spouse, the Nutrition Program is sponsored by the Erie County Dept. of Senior Services in cooperation with the Town of Concord. Low impact exercises offered before lunch on Mondays and Thursdays, usually starting at 11 a.m. Special events and holidays are also celebrated with special lunches!
The Concord / Springville Seniors meet at the Concord Senior Center:
· 2nd Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. is the business meeting – usually a speaker or entertainment at this time.
· 4th Wednesday of the month at 12:30 p.m. for pot luck lunch – bring a dish to pass (for at least 6 people) and your own place setting. No meetings scheduled for the 4th Wednesday of December.
Membership is open to all those 55 years of age or older residing in a Springville, Concord, or Glenwood post office district. Dues are $5 a year, payable in January, at which time new members will be considered, and you must be a paid up member and attend at least three meetings a year to go on trips. The Woman’s Club of Springville meets at the Senior Center the second Tuesday of the month at 2 pm. Call President Bonnie Tober at 592-7869 for more information about membership.
