As tax season is underway with two months left to file, those in the Springville area have a new place to turn to with a familiar face for getting their taxes done.

Get It Right Tax Service, located in the Spring Creek Professional Mall in Springville, is an independent service run by April Smith, who’s had over 10 years of experience in the field.

“I love my clients, and they love me,” she said. “I do anything I can to help somebody ‘get it right’ as well as feel comfortable.”

A resident of Machias, Smith previously did tax service in the area with EG Tax. But after parting ways a couple of years ago, and with encouragement from previous clients, she began preparing to open Get It Right this past summer to be ready for 2020’s tax season.

“I do basic individual returns, small business and small LLCs,” she said. “I’ll be available year-round, so if you get a letter over the summer, you don’t have to chase down a corporate person.”

Smith said she also can help with tax planning for the next year if customers think any major changes may be coming down the line.

“I ask lots of questions because I don’t want someone leaving here not knowing what’s going on,” she explained. “And sometimes I’ll draw things out, which actually helps them out. I don’t just sit here and punch numbers.”

Over the past decade, Smith said she has kept up with the tax law changes, but also helps those with the available programs out there, no matter how small the return may be, including for seniors and volunteer firemen.

“Nobody is too small,” she said. “I really like meeting people and getting to know people.”

Smith said she encourages her clients to ask questions, and if she doesn’t know the answer, she will look it up or refer them to someone who will know.

Once she decided to open her own tax service, Smith said the response from the community has been positive. While working in a local store, she said people would come up to her and ask her when she was going to do tax service again.

“Some of the people that have come in here have told me they even clipped my ad out of the paper and put it up on their refrigerator,” she added.
Smith said she loves having her office tucked away off the main road because it still has cozy home feel. She said she doesn’t have to deal with snowbanks on the sidewalk, and there is handicap accessible parking.
Inside Smith said the office’s atmosphere doesn’t have the sterile feel that bigger corporate businesses might have. The place is family-friendly, she said, with an area of toys and games for kids.

“I’m pretty sure that the people I’ve been dealing with over the years are very excited,” she said. “They aren’t treated like a bunch of papers that need to be punched in.”

Smith said she likes to gauge the customer’s level of expertise or comfort level with the process and then fit how she talks with them to make sure they understand how the filing will go.

“Some people just type it in, here you go and goodbye,” she said. “But I make sure we can get anything we can.”

For this season, all first-time clients receive 10% off, and firemen, veterans and corrections or police officers receive 15% off.
