The SGI fall sports seasons officially began this week, with Varsity and JV teams starting their practices all over Springville. And it won’t be long before the competition begins!
Next week, on Thursday, Aug. 24, the girls’ Varsity and JV soccer teams will host their first Scrimmage Fest and see how they stack up to some other local teams. The day will include four teams at each level.
“The main goal (of this event) is to give the teams some structured competition before the season starts,” said Varsity soccer coach Eric Holler. “Scheduling Orchard Park, Frontier and Pioneer allows us to get looks at some large schools who traditionally have very strong programs. Doing JV and varsity allows coaches to see how the younger athletes are. That’s something you don’t have many opportunities to do once the season starts.”
Each team will participate in two 40-minute scrimmages on the JV and Varsity fields, located behind the Springville Middle and Elementary schools.
The Varsity girls will play Orchard Park at 10 a.m. and Frontier at 11:50 a.m.
The JV girls will play OP at 10:55, followed by Frontier at 12:45 p.m.
The other two teams at each level will be competing on a second field at the same times.
Concessions will also be available for purchase and will include water, Gatorade, snacks and pizza. Proceeds, if any, will go to the soccer program.
Come cheer on the Lady Griffs as they launch their season!
