The Springville-Griffith Institute School held its monthly board meeting on Monday, June 12 at 7 p.m. and voted to accept the results of the May 16, 2017, Annual School Budget Vote and Board Member Election.

The Board passed a bond resolution authorizing the President of the Board of Education to delegate the power to issue bond anticipation notes to fund the purchase of seven full-size passenger buses, two 16-passenger buses, two minivan-type vehicles and one wheelchair accessible bus at an estimated cost of $925,000 and providing for the levy of a tax therefore to be collected in annual installments.

Maureen Lee, School Business Administrator, reported that the SGI Moody’s bond rating was upgraded to an A1 credit rating, up from A-. This rating states that the district has “stable financial backing with substantial cash reserves.”

Volunteers in the community are needed to serve on the Board of Education Audit Committee, responsible for identifying and minimizing financial risk within the District. Applicants should have a background in a financial field.  If interested please send a cover letter and resume to School Business Administrator Maureen Lee by June 21, 2017.

The board is continuing to review the food service program and contract with Sodexo after stating that there was a 26 percent drop in participation in the program over the past year. Board Member Chris Cerrone expressed the concern that “this decline is not just indicative of a reduction in student population; it’s far deeper—kids are opting out.” The board is committed to determining if there are fixable solutions to the declining participation in the program and will investigate into the option to sign with more than one company in the future.

Discussion over the SGI Business Office collecting tax payments for the upcoming year was brought up at the meeting. It would take moving around some staff hours but could be a possibility. Cattaraugus County Bank has agreed to collect payments and the administration is looking into working with the Village of Springville tax collector as well.

With the recent resignation of a senior clerk position at the Business Office, the administration will seek to restructure the current position and hire a District Treasurer, with an accounting background.

The Policy Committee presented a draft for a 2nd readings on Policy 6122, Workplace Civility along with drafts for a 1st reading of Policy 1510, Regular Board Meetings and Rules (Quorum and Parliamentary Procedure); Policy 5661, Wellness Policy  and Policy 7411, Academic Eligibility Policy for Athletic/Extracurricular Participation.

In other news, the Board voted to approve a mini grant in the amount of $650 from the Springville-Griffith Community Education Foundation awarded to the Springville High School Technology Department for the purchase of expanding the wood shop and small engine shop through the purchase of tools.

Staff Appreciation Day will be held across the district on June 23. High School Graduation will be held on June 24 and prom at the Statler Towers on June 26.

The next School Board/Reorganizational meeting was moved from the originally scheduled date of Monday , July 10 to Tuesday, July 11 at 7 p.m. at the High School Library, 290 North Buffalo Street, Springville. Future board meetings for the 2017-2018 year will take place on Tuesdays and a schedule will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
