Opera-Lytes’ is bringing a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado” to Springville Center for the Arts’ Mongerson theater next weekend.
Show times are June 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and June 23 at 2 pm.
The Mikado has been translated into numerous languages and is one of the most frequently played musical theater pieces in history.
The story is a scathing satire of high British society that opened in 1885 in London. The play has had many cultural influences in popular media.
The phrase “A short, sharp shock” was popularized from the song “I am so proud,” and “Let the punishment fit the crime” is an often-used phrase from another of the show’s songs.
Opera-Lytes is an amateur theater company based in Amherst and is the only theater company in the Buffalo area that presents the works of Gilbert and Sullivan — the famed “Savoy Operas” — on a yearly basis.
The company has staged all but one of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas and several company veterans can boast of having performed the complete 13 works in the canon.
