We finished with a league record of 7-1 and a non-league record of 8-1-1. This year’s team is going to be very well represented at both our B meet and our ECIC championship. We will have 13 girls attending this Saturday’s B meet and 15 girls representing SGI at ECIC’s next week. Members of our B Meet squad are: Alix Dubel, Andra Wissing, Avery Boyles, Chloe Milbrand, Erin Jurkowski, Haley Patterson, Hannah Bergener, Madisyn Emley, Oliva Langa, Samantha Yetter, Shannon O’Hara, Sydney Stisser, and Katie Wolf. These magnificent 13 have worked extremely hard and I know that their hard work is going to pay off Saturday as they dominate the B Meet and bring home many ribbons.
Last Friday, the girls dual meet of the season became a reality as we have been preparing and focusing our entire dual season on this meet vs. Eden. Our team goal this year was to beat Eden, making SGI 2nd in the league (East Aurora 1st). When the girls started the meet, the 200 medley relay team of Allie Lavanture, Carley Delaney, Anna Lawton, and Elle Holland took 1st place with their sectional time of 2:06.35. Our B Medley relay was also stacked with Lauren Ditchey leading off in backstroke, Kierstin Komenda in breast, Lexi Blesy in fly, and Abby Moscato in free, finishing 3rd, giving SGI another point. From that 7-3 scoreboard lead, SGI never put the brakes on for the remaining 11 events. McKenzie Galvin took a 1st in the 200 free and teammate Sydney Emley took 3rd. Elle Holland and Kierstin Komenda took a 1st and 3rd respectively in the 200 IM making the score 17-9 (SGI). Anna Lawton and Allie Lavanture plowed through the 50 free getting 2nd and 3rd. Galvin and Emley again back in the water together for that “dreadful” 500 yard swim. However, neither of them struggle with this swim—they are both strong teammates that glide through the water making 20 lengths look effortless. Their 1st and 3rd place finished pushed Eden further away as the score then became 37-29. The nail digger to Eden was when the 100 back entered the water and Allie Lavanture and Sadie Olrogg took 1st and 2nd respectively making the score 48-36! The 100 breastroke was going to be a tough race and fight to the end, but the strong finishes by Carley Delaney (2nd place) and Lauren Ditchey (3rd place) held the 12 point differential in the score, making our 400 free relay breathe a little easier. However, the team did not stop there. The 400 free relay of Holland, Lawton, Sydney Emley, and Galvin not only took a 1st place, but received a new pool record! The final score was 59-43….and cheers filled the pool arena!
Tuesday, the girls swam a non-league meet vs. Hamburg (large school). To all of our surprise, we won 58-44! These girls are so deserving of all their wins and I know we have more great things to come in our post-season meets.
Congratulations SGI Lady Griffs and keep on swimming!
