Head to Allegany State Park (ASP) in April and May and enjoy an array of activities for everyone!

This year, ASP is combining Earth Day and Arbor Day into one celebration. This family-friendly event takes place on Saturday, April 15  from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Red House Administration building.

The fun kicks off at 10 a.m. with a one-hour guided Treasure/Tree I.D. hike on Red Jacket Trail.

Kids’ activities run from 10 a.m. to noon and will feature Sun Painting – weather permitting. This activity will run from 10 to 11 a.m. Bring a t-shirt to paint, or pick up a paintable bandana for a $1 donation. Sun painted items will be ready to take home around 12:30 p.m. Kids can also paint tree cookies and more!

Rounding out the day will be a guest speaker from 12 to 1 p.m., topic to be determined.

Ongoing during this event, participants can test their skills at Nature Trivia and check out various displays such as composting and recycling. Event attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch to enjoy in the park. For more information, contact the Environmental Education/Recreation Department at (716) 354-9101 ext. 236 or check out the Allegany State Park Facebook page.

Get out of the house and come join in the fun as Allegany State Park continues its series of hikes called “3rd Saturday Treks.” As the name implies, these free, family-friendly hikes take place on the 3rd Saturday of each month from April through October. The treks will be led by park staff and summer interns.

This month’s 3rd Saturday Trek will take place on April 15. It coincides with the annual Arbor Day/Earth Day celebration, so bring the kids and make a day of it! Join Environmental Educator Adele Wellman for a Treasure/Tree I.D. hike starting at 10 a.m. Come learn about the trees of Allegany State Park and maybe even gather a little treasure along the way! Attendees are asked to meet at the Red House Administration Building at 10 a.m. and to come dressed for the weather.

This hike will last approximately an hour. Registration is not required. For more information, visit the Allegany State Park Facebook page or contact the Environmental Education/Recreation Department at (716) 354-9101 ext. 236.

On May 6, take time to give back during I Love My Park Day, a state-wide volunteer initiative at state parks and other lands. Projects at ASP include painting cabins, clearing brush and picking up trash. To register for this event, and for more info, visit

While tent camping is not yet open for the season, you can still choose from dozens of heated cabins on both the Red House and Quaker sides of the park. Or treat yourself to one of the Bova or Parallel full-service cottages, which include all linens, dishes and even a bathroom. They make a getaway to the park a breeze!

Check out the brand new waterfowl observation deck and walkway below the Red House Dam.

With the addition of the all-new Quaker Bathhouse last year, Quaker Lake has become a hotbed of activity. For an opportunity to enjoy the lake even more, this season, you’ll be able to rent kayaks, SUPs, paddle boats and row boats at the new Quaker Boathouse.

The Quaker Boathouse area features a large Amish-made shed placed near the beach near the side of the beach volleyball area. Cold beverages, bait, beach sundries, toys and beach chairs will now be available down near the beach.

This will be the first time these types of rentals are available at Quaker Lake, and while the timing of it coincides with the Red House Dam project, which will affect the use of Red House Lake in the summer, this location will be permanent. The new Quaker Boathouse will be open weekends in May and will remain open throughout the summer and into the fall season.

The Red House Boathouse, offering the same types of rentals, plus canoes and bikes, is scheduled to open in late April, weather permitting.

For those who frequent the stores within the park, the gift shop inside the Administration Building is open every day and hours will be extended in a few weeks.

The two general stores and Quaker Gift Shop will all open at the end of April, weather-permitting.

The Park Restaurant, located inside the Red House Administration Building, is open Friday through Sunday. The restaurant offers a Friday fish fry, Sunday breakfast buffet and a variety of salads, burgers, sandwiches and more. Watch for itssummer menu coming next month, the opening of their outdoor patio for the season and several themed nights planned throughout the summer.
