The Varsity Girls Tennis team started their season off in style on Friday night as they took down the Depew Wildcats by a score of 3-2.

Taking the first point of the match was the tandem of Haylee Cerrone and Maria Rumfola. In their first varsity match as partners, they played well together and made crucial shots when it mattered most to win both sets by a score of 6-3 and 7-5, respectively.

Depew had to forfeit their third singles position, so SGI took that point, which meant the team only needed one more win to clinch the victory, that point came from the senior tandem of Maddie Safford and Anna Franklin.  Both girls had to shake off some early nerves to win a first set tie-breaker (7-6/6-4).  After that, the girls seemed to find their rhythm in the second set winning comfortably by a 6-2 score.

The girls dropped the first and second singles spots, but both Lily Vanuga and Hannah Yetter displayed a high level of play to instill confidence in future matches.

Rachel O’Neal stepped in and played in her first ever match in exhibition singles, and handled that challenge seamlessly as she dismantled her opponent by a set score of 6-1.

The girls hosted the Amherst Tigers on Tuesday afternoon at the SGI tennis courts.
