Last week Thursday, the Varsity girls’ soccer team headed to Eden to play under their lights, and came away with a 2-0 win. Grace Zabawa and Jacy Schelble scored for the Lady Griffs, with assists by Zabawa and Erin Drewiega.

The following day, the girls hosted Christian Central on Pop Warner Field for their senior night game, taking away an 8-0 win. Grace Zabawa had four goals on the night, with Kelsey Zabawa, Grace Gernatt Jackie Roggie and Cora Boundy each adding one. Kelsey Zabawa had two assist, and Drewiega and Roggie had one each.

On Tuesday, the girls hosted Alden, looking for a win to top the division. Alden’s only league loss on the season was to Springville in August. The game saw the two teams very evenly matched, with a series of incredible saves by goalie Amy Stabell. At the end of regulation, the game was scoreless, sending it into overtime. Springville had a few good chances, but couldn’t capitalize, and after two 10-minute OT periods, the girls took away their third tie of the season.

They wrap up their regular season on Thursday when they travel to Lackawanna.

Last week Wednesday, the JV girls soccer team headed to Tonawanda for their fourth and final matchup of the season, and their second playing on Tonawanda’s turf field. The first three games resulted in lopsided wins for the Lady Griffs, and the fourth time around was much of the same, with Springville coming away with a 5-0 win.

Alainey Leatherbarrow scored a hat trick for the Lady Griffs, with Kiley Nolan adding one assist, and Mabel Robinson adding two. Hannah Baumgartner scored one off a penalty shot in the first 10 minutes of the game, and Robinson shot one in off a direct kick late in the game.

The following day, the girls headed south to Olean for their third matchup of the season. The first game saw Olean taking away the win in overtime, and the second time around, Springville won 2-0, so this time was anyone’s game.

Once again, the two teams were pretty evenly matched, but with Springville missing some players, their lineup was readjusted. Olean scored first on an outside shot, but Springville quickly answered back with a goal by Alainey Leatherbarrow, beautifully assisted by Dru Robinson, and the game remained tied at the half.

Leatherbarrow shot another one in, and Springville had the lead with about 10 minutes left on the clock. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hang onto the lead and Olean scored late in the game to tie it up and send the game into OT. In the first of the two 10-minute overtime periods, Olean sent one in from the right, and Springville did not come back from it, resulting in a 3-2 loss for the Lady Griffs, only their second of the season.

On Tuesday, the girls hosted Alden. They met previously early in the season, with Springville taking away the win.

“The girls played an outstanding game, allowing Alden only two shots on net,” said coach Kerri Voit. She noted that, “Mabel Robinson, Hannah Carrow and Ava Dziak led the team defensively to help shut down Alden’s offense all game. Brooke Walker and Shelby Stisser kept the Griffs’ offensive rolling all game long, feeding the ball from the outside for many shots on net for Springville.”

While the Lady Griffs had many scoring chances all game, they were only able to score one in the first half, a corner kick by Alainey Leatherbarrow, shot in by Deanna Johnson. The game ended up in a 1-0 victory for the girls.

The girls wrap up their season next week when they head to Portville on Thursday.
