On Saturday, Feb. 4, seven Griffin wrestlers competed in the Class B wrestling Championships at Cheektowaga Central.  Ian Baker and Mikey Evans took first place in their respective weight classes.

Ian Baker beat his opponent from Olean in the finals 15-0, earning a tech fall win.

“Ian placed 2nd last year in the Section for small schools and is preparing to wrestle his best tournament yet,” explained Head Coach Mark Vogel. “A win this weekend would send him on to the state tournament.  Competition will be tough for all of the wrestlers this weekend and Coach Evans and I are stressing the importance of preparation and smart wrestling.”

Jared Hecht earned a 4th place finish, wrestling strong and finishing 3-2 on the day (two of those wins came by pin).

“Jared Hecht and Mikey Evans have been challenging each other in practice and the efforts are paying off,” said Vogel. “Mikey is the third seed going into this weekend, and he hopes to carry his momentum from the class championships into the tournament. Jared has improved tremendously over the course of the season and has devoted himself to getting better.”

Matt Evans also placed 4th, going 2-2.

Benn Smith, Shilo Rogers and Sean Saramak also wrestled this week, but did not place to move on to Sectionals.

“Benn Smith pushed through a lingering injury to wrestle at the class championships, but came up short in his bid to qualify for the Division II championships,” Vogel noted.  “He worked hard to stay in shape and wrestled tough in arguably the toughest weight class in Section VI.”

Vogel added that, “The athletes have turned up the intensity in the wrestling room in preparation for the postseason. We’ll continue to push them this week and prepare them to accomplish the goals they’ve set for themselves.”

The athletes punched their ticket to the Division II championships this coming Saturday at Salamanca for a chance to go on to the State tournament.

Great job gentlemen and best of luck this weekend!
