In 2005, SGI graduate Jake Miller started a small business selling Christmas trees and wreaths. The following summer, he added a greenhouse on his lot at 11904 Route 240 in East Concord. With the help of family and friends, the business has grown tremendously since then.

Jake’s Greenhouse is a family operation.  Jake’s sister, Oakley Reding, was working behind the counter on my recent visit and I asked if Jake has always been into landscaping and greenhouse work.

“Jake has always been interested in greenhouses,” she said. “I remember in middle school, he had completed a project focusing on hydroponics.”

You can also find Jake’s father, Dave, around helping cut and prep Christmas trees.

Today, the business is a year-round greenhouse business with seven greenhouses offering annual flowers, vegetable plants, Easter plants, seasonal produce, balled trees, and at this time of year, Christmas trees and wreaths.  Jake offers a wide variety of greens for decking the halls— not only wreaths, but also centerpieces, poinsettias, swags, garlands and kissing balls.

Cut Christmas trees are $7 a foot and they offer several varieties and sizes that are ready to plant.  Plantable trees range in price from $7 to $45 and up depending on size.

For several year now, Jake and his family have been offering Santa Night the first Friday in December.  It is one of the first glimpses of Santa in the Greater Springville area.  This year, Santa Night drew a crowd of nearly 200 children.

If you missed Santa Night, don’t worry—there is still plenty of fun to be had. Jake’s will be offering sleigh rides, provided by LJ Stables of Springville.  The rides will go from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10 and cost $5.   There are still many wreaths and trees available too.

Jake’s is also about providing quality goods and services to the area.  There is a small kitchen that offers lunches in the form of deli sandwiches and pizza.  A small store offers grass fed beef, Cuba cheese, Upstate Farm milk, and ice cream.  There is also a variety of maple products sold.

I mentioned services:  Jake has a landscaping and snowplowing business.  He offers springtime services, such as spring clean up, tree planting and landscaping.  In the summer,  Jake offers lawn mowing, bed mulching and landscaping.    During the fall and winter, Jake offers snowplowing, roof shoveling and sidewalk shoveling.  Many of Jakes projects can be seen around Springville— the flower beds and landscaping in front of the post office is one of Jake’s most recent projects.

Keeping the family in the  business is one of Jake’s trademarks.   On the site of the greenhouse, you will find Dave’s Compost & Mulch. Jake’s parents offer a variety of mulch and compost offered from April to September. They offer mulch in black, red, brown and triple brown. They deliver as well.
