It’s spring, which means race season has arrived. whether you’re a seasoned pro who prefers to navigate trails through the woods or a newbie who just like to hit the pavement, there’s something for everyone in the upcoming months.

April 15, Bunny Hop

Head to the American Legion Post #362, 1 Legion Drive (off Center Rd near Beech Rd) in East Aurora for an Easter-themed run. Pre-registration is $20 through April 14 and includes a premium gift for the first 900 registered runners, and free food and beer after the race. Awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female in each age group is a chocolate bunny. For more information, visit

April 22, Tortoise and the Hare 5K and Fun Run

Sign up for this family event in Chestnut Ridge Park to benefit Earth Spirit Education. Run the 5K or walk in the park on a 1-mile course. Registration is $30 ($35 after April 1) for adults and $20 ($25 after April 1) for children/students ages 17 and under. Children 6 and under are free. Registration includes race and Jaguar chip bib, T-shirt and swag bag, and all Earth Spirit activities.

April 30, SAPS Race WNY Maple Festival

During Franklinville’s annual Maple Festival, burn off some of those calories in this 10K, 5K and walk. Entry fee is only $10 (for 10K or 5K), $5 for the walk. Day of race registration is $20 and $15. Please bring a non-perishable food donation for the local food pantry. First 100 registrants get the Maple Festival T-shirt. Register at

May 6, Allegany Adventure Run

There are three distances to choose from for these races inside Allegany State Park: 6K, 13K & 27K.  Non-technical in nature, the 6K and 13K courses equally pack a punch.  The 27K course is the grandaddy that features a 3-mile section of single track and the memorable 2-mile climbing finish back to the summit. T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 300 who register.  Race-day registration welcome.  Proceeds help support the Allegany Nordic Ski Patrol and HEART Animal Shelters. More info is available at

May 11-Knox Farm Trail Run

Buffalo Orienteering Club presents the Knox Park 5 Mile Trail Run. $10 fee. Single loop dirt trail. Pizza and beverages at the post race.

May 13-Holland Tulip Festival 5K

Head to Holland to check out their annual Tulip Festival and participate in the 5K. The event will take place at the Holland Community Center with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to the Holland Boys and Girls Club. Registration is $30 or $35 after May 11. Awards will be given, and partipipants can enjoy the post-race party, door prizes and chip timing. Register at

May 13 Happy Half and 5K, Beer Mile

This day will feature a Half Marathon, 5k, and a Beer Mile for those with iron stomachs, all starting and finishing at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville. Score a custom-designed medals as well as men’s and women’s specific shirts for both 1/2 Marathon and 5k finishers.  Visit for info.

May 14, Grinder Trail Race

The 2017 Grinder Trail Race takes place at beautiful and challenging Sprague Brook Park once again proving spring training is going to show!  Runners gear up for this wild and wicked 3.5-miler through park trails including single track, grass sections, creek crossing and hills.  T-shirts go to the first 150 or those registered by May 5. guaranteed. May 23-June 27, Dirt Devil Series

Six individual trail running races taking place at Sprague Brook Park on Tuesday evenings (May 23 and 20, June 6, 13, 20 and 27).   Race in four events to count towards the series points or race as few as you like just for kicks-everyone is welcome.  Post-race celebration at the Colden Country Inn just down the street in Colden after each event featuring food and beverage specials for participants.  The Dirt Devil Series helps support HEART Animal Shelters of WNY.
