CHEEKTOWAGA — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity volleyball team kicked off the season with a victory against Cheektowaga, winning in four sets, 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-14.
Freshman setter, hitter and star server Ella Wittman led her team to victory in the first set. Rachel Stressinger’s middle blocking and solid defense started SGI off with the lead in the second while sophomore setter Marinna Heichberger found Sara Ehlers in the front for 4 kills, and Ivette Lewandowski for 2 kills.
While Cheektowaga took the third set, Jillian Roggie played tough both in offense and defense, and Melanie Barry hit middle with a kill and two blocks. Heichberger had four assists, as Stressinger blocked for three points and Sara Ehlers sealed the deal serving four aces in a row to seal the victory in the fourth set.

The SGI junior varsity volleyball team swept its first match of the season, defeating Cheektowaga 25-22, 25-18, 25-21.
SGI’s serving was led by Sydney Fuller, Kailea Sullivan and Lauren Frescella.  MacKenzie Ownes lead the team in kills, followed by McKenzie Steff, Alivia Sipes and Hailey Turner. Mia Kendall added some key blocking in each set for the Lady Griffs.
