Elementary school students participated in “stuff a bus” for Thanksgiving, collecting nearly 1,400 cans and boxes of food on a school bus that was then transported to the Break of Life Food Pantry.

Not only is Thanksgiving a time to be grateful for what you have, but to give to others in need. Schools oftentimes run food drives or other events around this time of year for local food pantries or similar organizations.

Sometimes there is an added incentive for students to participate, like a pizza party for the winning class and other times the giving is incorporated into other activities. Both of these types took place in the Springville Griffith Institute school district prior to their Thanksgiving break.

Students at both Colden Elementary and Springville Elementary were given a chance to give back along with the students at the middle and high schools.

Colden Elementary held a “Stuff A Bus” food drive which is just what it seems: students and their families along with staff members brought in non-perishable canned goods and boxes of food. Then the Colden Elementary Student Council members sorted the food, packed it all up, and loaded it onto a bus which then transported it to the Break of Life Food Pantry which helps out families in our area who are in need. The drive amounted to an astonishing 1,396 cans and boxes of food!

SGI’s Middle School Student Council hosted a similar drive to benefit the Springville Food Pantry. The canned food drive was held during the week of Nov. 18, the last full week of school before students went on break. The 450 items that were collected during the drive were delivered to the Food Pantry on the Monday prior to Thanksgiving.

As for the high school, they went a little outside of the box and didn’t just hold a food drive, they hosted the Inaugural Turkey Bowl, which was a flag football tournament. The junior team came out on top overall after beating the sophomore team in the first game and going on to beat the combined senior/freshman team in the second and final game.

The event was held on Friday, Nov. 22 and was intended to raise money and canned goods for distribution through Love Inc. Admission to the event was $5 for players and $1 for spectators or a canned good.

High School Principal James Bialasik along with Vice Principal and Athletic Director DeMartino served as referees for the games. Other staff members that are thanked for their involvement are Mr. Holler who announced, Mrs. Komenda who worked the front table and Miss. Orsini who organized the whole event. Another thank you also goes to Main Street Pizza for donating pizza for the event.

SGI was very successful in their efforts of generosity towards those in need in our area regardless of how they did it! Thank you to everyone who made an effort to help the cause!
