Springville rolled to its second straight girls tennis victory at home on the backs of singles players Lily Vanuga, Haylee Cerrone and Maria Rumfola, who all won in straight sets on Thursday, Sept. 26, as SGI topped Eden 4-1.
Vanuga won 6-1, 6-2 in first singles, Cerrone won 6-1, 6-1 at second and Rumfola won 6-2, 6-1 at third.
In first doubles, Grace Terhune and Elle Schosek won 6-1, 6-4.
“The story of the day in this match was the improved net play of both players,” coach Bob Gainey said. “The girls finished many points from the net and led to the big win.”
In second doubles, Ava Dziak and Layla Gartler fell 4-6, 4-6.
Marissa Martens and Julie Bartoszek won an exhibition doubles match 6-1.
Springville 3, Depew 2
Grace Terhune and Elle Schosek won 6-0, 6-2 for the first point of the night in first doubles on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at home.
Layla Gartler and Ava Dziak earned point No. 2 by taking second doubles, 6-2, 6-1. Winning the decisive third point of the match was third singles player Maria Rumfola 6-1, 6-2. “Maria was fantastic on the day hitting some great ground strokes and jumping on her opponents’ second serve,” Gainey noted.
In second singles, Haylee Cerrone fell 4-6, 2-6. In first singles, Lily Vanuga played a highly entertaining match despite losing 6-3, 6-2.
